With one of the main fishing ports in the country, Sesimbra is sea, which reveals itself in traditions and gastronomy, but it is also a beach destination, very popular in the hot months. A village tucked away between Arrábida and Espichel, it nestles in a bay that hugs the Atlantic. At the top, like a guardian, the castle, 850 years old and medieval in style, stands out in the landscape. But, it is on the waterfront, next to the beaches of California and Ouro, that Sesimbra vibrates, to the rhythm of the tides. It is mandatory to visit the Fortaleza de Santiago, which currently houses the Sesimbra Maritime Museum and from which you can see the Port of Abrigo, the starting point for exploring Sesimbra from the sea, aboard a boat from the Mega Dive, passing through secret beaches and hoping to spot dolphins. In honor of the work of writer Ernest Hemingway, almost 20 years ago, a fishermen’s space was created next to the Fortaleza de Santiago, offering the fish and seafood that made Sesimbra famous. “Rocaz rice, “Cataplanas†and “Caldeiradas†are specialties in the O Velho e o Mar restaurant. Another option is to reserve a table at the small O Zagaia to discover a relaxed and creative approach to the most traditional recipe, where, among other dishes, “Cuttlefish croquettes and black garlic mayonnaise†and “Carbine rice and seaweed†shine. Overlooking the bay, the former Sesimbra Hotel & Spa has undergone extensive renovations. It even changed its name and, since May 2024, it has been called Sesimbra Oceanfront Hotel. The changes transformed this unit into the first 5-star hotel in the village.
