Argentina and the United Kingdom decide to resume dialogue on the Falkland Islands

The Foreign Ministers of Argentina and the United Kingdom decided on Tuesday, in New York, to resume dialogue on issues related to the Falkland Islands, excluding the sovereignty of the archipelago, historically claimed by the South American State.

The Argentine minister, Diana Mondino, and her British counterpart, David Lammy, met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, “as part of a renewed stage of the bilateral relationship, characterized by dialogue and the building of trust”, he said the Argentine ministry, in communication.

Mondino and Lammy “advanced with a broad agenda of topics, which include different aspects related to the South Atlantic”, indicated the official note.

This dialogue incorporates the safeguard clause contained in paragraph 02 of the joint declaration of October 19, 1989, which establishes that no future agreement will imply any type of cession or recognition of sovereignty over the Falklands, over which Argentina and the United Kingdom faced each other, in a war in 1982.

Among other matters, Mondino and Lammy agreed to resume negotiations to finalize the third phase of the project which, with the intervention of the International Red Cross, seeks to identify the bodies of Argentine soldiers killed in the 1982 war.

They also decided to organize, by the end of the year, a trip to the islands for relatives of dead Argentines, so that they can visit the graves of the soldiers buried there.

The ministers also decided to “move forward with concrete measures in terms of fisheries conservation and in favor of better connections, including the reactivation of the weekly flight from São Paulo, Brazil, to the islands, which made a monthly stopover in Córdoba”, in the center of Argentina.
