Angolan Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento dies at age 99. Marcelo evokes him with “great nostalgia”

The Portuguese President of the Republic “with great nostalgia” evoked the Angolan Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento, who died today at the age of 99, in Luanda.

“The President of the Republic recalls, with great nostalgia, his former Colleague from the Faculty of Law, a notable Angolan personality and figure of the Catholic Church, Cardinal D. Alexandre Nascimento, who left us after a very intense life of almost a century, theologian , philosopher and humanist”, says Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in a note published on the website of the Presidency of the Republic.

The Portuguese President expressed his “deep feelings to his family, the Angolan Church and Angola”.

Alexandre do Nascimento was ordained cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 1983 and was the oldest member of the College of Cardinals.

Graduated in Theology, the Angolan cardinal who was also president of CEAST and was archbishop emeritus of Luanda, participated in the conclaves for the election of Pope Benedict XVI (in 2005) and the election of Pope Francis (in 2013), but did not have the right to vote due to age.

In August, the Angolan Catholic Church celebrated the 50th anniversary of Cardinal Alexandre do Nascimento’s episcopal ordination.
