Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told the Hungarian Prime Minister this Wednesday in Kiev that Ukraine lacks a fair peace and Viktor Orbán called for a ceasefire to allow peace talks.
At a joint press conference, Zelensky considered that the Hungarian leader’s visit illustrates “common European priorities and the importance of bringing a fair peace to Ukraine and the whole of Europe”.
On Monday, Hungary assumed the six-month rotating presidency of the European Union (EU), which began negotiations for Ukraine’s accession.
Orbán is the only leader of the EU countries considered close to Russia.
The Hungarian nationalist leader arrived in Kiev today for talks with Zelensky, in what is his first trip to Ukraine since the country was invaded by Russia in February 2022.
Orbán said he appealed to Zelensky to consider a ceasefire as quickly as possible in order to achieve peace, according to French news agency AFP.
“I asked the President [Zelensky] to consider the possibility of a ceasefire as quickly as possible”, which would be “limited in time and would allow peace negotiations to be accelerated”, he stated.
