Alex Salmond, former First Minister of Scotland, has died at the age of 69, according to reports a BBC e o “Guardian”. He lost consciousness after a speech in North Macedonia this Saturday.

The emblematic politician was the architect and one of the most relevant voices in the referendum campaign for Scottish independence, held on September 18, 2014.

Salmond was First Minister of Scotland between 2007 and 2014. He left office precisely after failing to secure a “yes” vote in the 2014 referendum, handing over the leadership of the Edinburgh Government to his deputy, Nicola Sturgeon. The independence project was failed with the “no” victory, with 55% of the votes.

In 2021, the former prime minister launched a pro-independence party. A year earlier, Boris Johnson, then Prime Minister of Great Britain, had denied the request to hold a new referendum on Scottish independence.

Labor Party leader Anas Sarwar has already highlighted that Alex Salmond was “a central figure [na política da Escócia] for more than three decades.”
