PPE supports far-right proposal and pro-European majority breaks again

It is yet another example of disagreement between the self-styled pro-European forces in the European Parliament, with Socialists, Liberals and Greens accusing the European People’s Party, the PSD and CDS political family, of joining the far right.

The EPP, led by German Manfred Weber, voted as a bloc to pass two amendments proposed by the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ENS) group, the far-right group to which the German AfD belongs. One called for “adequate funding for physical barriers on the Union’s external border”, namely walls and fences. The other amendment defended the creation of migrant return centers outside the EUand “if necessary”, their “adequate financing”.
