Jack Jones, the singer of the theme song for “The Love Boat” has died

Jack Jones died crooner American known to the general public for having voiced the title song of the television series “O Barco do Amor”. He was 86 years old.

His death was confirmed by his goddaughter, Nicole Whitty, to “The Hollywood Reporter”. Jones had been battling leukemia for two years.

Born John Allen Jones, the singer was the son of actress Irene Hervey and tenor Allan Jones, having started his professional career in 1959, when he signed a contract with the Capitol record label. That same year he released his debut album, “This Love of Mine”.

In 1962, the singer won a Grammy Award for Best Solo Vocal Performance, with ‘Lollipops and Roses’. He would repeat the feat again in 1964, with the release of ‘Wives and Lovers’, a song by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

Throughout his career, Jack Jones managed to place ten singles in the top 10 of Billboard, including three “number ones”: ‘The Race Is On’, ‘The Impossible Dream’ and ‘Lady’. He was married six times, one of them to actress Jill St. John.

Originally broadcast between 1977 and 1986, the series “O Barco do Amor” was shown in Portugal, in the 1980s, on RTP 1. More recently, it was retransmitted on RTP Memória.
