Israeli attack kills three journalists in Lebanon

An attack by the Israeli Army caused the death of three journalists in southeast Lebanon, the official Lebanese news agency ANI announced.

“Israeli warplanes carried out an attack at 03:30 [01:30 em Lisboa] on the border between Lebanon and Syria,” ANI said, targeting the Hasbaya community.

According to local press, the attack hit a hotel in Hasbaya, with nearly 5,000 inhabitants, located about 50 kilometers south of the Lebanese capital, Beirut.

The media also reported Israeli airstrikes against the southern suburbs of Beirut. The most violent attack occurred in the Choueifat al-Amrousieh area, where it destroyed two buildings and started a large fire. Another attack targeted the Sainte-Thérèse district, where two buildings, close to the Constitutional Court, collapsed.

On September 23, Israel began an intense campaign of air strikes against the strongholds of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah and, shortly afterwards, a ground offensive in southern Lebanon.

In a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, more than 2,570 people have died and at least 12,000 have been injured, the vast majority in the last five weeks, according to the latest count from Lebanese health authorities.

The Israeli offensive has left more than 1.2 million people displaced, Beirut authorities said, and some 334,800 Syrian citizens and another 150,100 Lebanese have fled the violence in Lebanon for Syria.

Israel claims it wants to remove Hezbollah from the border and end rocket attacks, to allow the return of around 60,000 inhabitants displaced from the north of the territory.
