“It could be my son”: Carris driver’s mother calls for an end to violence in Lisbon

The mother of a Carris driver calls for an end to disrespect in the Lisbon regionfollowing the death of a man shot by PSP in Cova da Moura. In addition to a motorcycle, two buses and eight passenger vehicles set on fire, three injuries were reported, one of which was seriously injured.

Manuela Gouveia, mother of a driver who works in the Santo Antônio dos Cavaleiros region, asks the population and the police to remain calm.

“As a mother, I am very worried. It could have been my son in the truck. The only thing I have to say is that both the police and the people who are setting fire should remain calm. Burning buses won’t solve anything, so that’s not how we have to resolve this situation.”

The Public Security Police (PSP) reports that in the last 24 hours they detained 13 people – and identified 18 others – who were involved in the riots that have been occurring since Monday in various areas of the city.

The incidents in Greater Lisbon began after Odair Moniz, 43 years old, Cape Verdean citizen, and resident of Bairro do Zambujal, in Amadora, was shot by a PSP agent in the early hours of Monday, in Bairro da Cova da Moura, in same municipality, and died shortly afterwards, at Hospital São Francisco Xavier, in Lisbon.
