Catherine Ravenscroft (Cate Blanchett) is a documentary filmmaker, famous for risking everything in discovering the truth and exposing those who hide it by taking advantage of it. Having built his reputation on the basis of a character publicly praised as unspoiled and immaculate, it is not without concern that he proceeds to read a book that was sent to him — “The Perfect Stranger” —, a novel written by an obscure retired professor, Stephen Brigstocke ( Kevin Kline), where it is warned, right at the beginning, that any similarity with people and events that actually occurred is not a coincidence, it is a purpose.
