PGR condemns riots and makes a promise in the case of the man shot by a PSP agent: “We will be as quick as possible”

The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Amadeu Guerra, promises “speed” in the investigation into the death of Odair Moniz, 43-year-old Cape Verdean citizen shot by a PSP agent in the early hours of Mondayin Cova da Moura.

“We will be as quick as possible. The investigation is underway. There is a defendant. We are assisted by a criminal police body. We will give instructions to act quickly”, said Amadeu Guerra, speaking to journalists this Thursday in Lisbon. “There are images eventually. All forms of evidence are useful for the Public Prosecutor’s Office to understand and decide its position in relation to this issue”, he added.

In relation to existence of video surveillance imagesthe PGR reinforced the importance of all tests. “When we carry out the investigation, we await all possible evidence that exists. So, this evidence, namely testimonials and vehicle inspections, is used to do a good job, which is what citizens want”, he declared.

Regarding the use of the weapon by the PSP agent, Amadeu Guerra says that this will be “investigated during the investigation”, highlighting that self-defense situations depend on the circumstances, in addition to not being aware of the “indictment that was given to constitute an accused”.

As for the disturbances in several areas of Greater Lisbonthe PGR said that “the facts and allegations that are made” will be investigated. “If there are complaints, the Public Ministry will investigate the situation”, he indicated. “I condemn these types of riots. But we also have to recognize that it is not just in Portugal that this happens, abroad we see identical situations and sometimes with much greater severity than here.”

Two buses and seven vehicles were set on fire during the early hours of this Thursday in several locations in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. The PSP also recorded fires in dumpsters in Amadora, Sintra, Oeiras, Odivelas, Barreiro, Lisbon and Almada, following the protests that followed the death of Odair Moniz, a resident of the Zambujal neighborhood.
