Rúben Guerreiro: “Even on vacation, I have difficulty getting on a bike just to ride. I can’t change the competition chip”

Born in Pegões, in Montijo, Ruben Guerreiro went through stages until he reached the major world competitions. He confesses that as a child it wasn’t easy to share his love of cycling with other kids: “I tried to talk to them about the Tour de France, but they only wanted to know about football. They left me talking to myself.” He soon realized that he needed to leave the country to achieve a good international career. He left at age 20 and played for teams in the United States and Belgium. He is currently at Movistar, in Spain. In 2020, in the midst of Covid-19, he reached the highest moment of his career when he became the only Portuguese in history to win the Tour of Italy Mountain Grand Prix: “It was a pitched battle on a bicycle . The Italians were always talking and playing psychological games. Portuguese, you are this and that. Luckily, I managed to keep this shirt.”
