Köfte: sin or delicacy? How some pork meatballs shook Turkey
Any foreigner who lives long enough in Turkey comes to two unshakable conclusions – everything in everyday life has to do with politics – whether you are a supporter of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan or a supporter of a secular Turkey, and almost everything has the to do with religion. From football to clothing, from the newspaper you buy to what you eat. One of the scandals that shook the country in recent weeks illustrates this fact well.
The story is told in a few words: a well-known and respected restaurant chain, called Köfteci Yusuf (or José’s Meatballs, in Portuguese), with 280 restaurants in more than 30 Turkish provinces, and which employs around 12 thousand people, it was accused of including pork in her main dish.
