Contempts in Greater Lisbon: minister reveals that there are three detainees and promises to do everything to bring those responsible “to justice”

The Minister of Internal Administration classifies as “perfectly inadmissible” the disturbances that occurred in the Greater Lisbon areawhich resulted in three people being arrested on Tuesday, two of which were accused of arson and attacking police officers, following contempt following the death of a man shot by the PSP in Cova da Moura, Amadora, said a police source.

“The PSP, in conjunction with all security forces, has been carrying out all the activities and functions necessary to restore public tranquility and support for the populations since the beginning,” guaranteed Margarida Blasco, speaking to journalists in Faro. “We will do everything we can to bring all those who participated in these riots to justice,” he added.

The minister also said that an “emergency meeting” of the Internal Security System took place this evening. The insults have been ongoing since Monday after the death of a man shot by the PSP in Cova da Moura and which spread across several areas of Lisbon, namely Carnaxide (Oeiras), Casal de Cambra (Sintra) and Damaia (Amadora).

A PSP source told Lusa that three people were arrested in the municipality of Amadora, two for arson and assaulting police officers and another for arson and possession of combustible material. The minister confirmed the three arrests.

According to the same source, in Amadora, an officer was stoned and two police vehicles were damaged, as well as five other vehicles, and several rubbish bins were set on fire.

“A group unsuccessfully tried to set fire to a gas station,” said the same source. In the Portela neighborhood, in Carnaxide, Oeiras, a bus was set on fire on Tuesday night, as well as several rubbish bins and a light vehicle.

In the municipality of Sintra, an object was thrown at the Casal de Cambra PSP police station, without causing damage. In Damaia there were riots in several streets, including the throwing of firecrackers and stones on public roads, as well as arson in several garbage bins.

Speaking to journalists in the Zambujal neighborhood, in Amadora, superintendent Manuel Gonçalves assured on Tuesday night that the police forces are investigating to find those responsible for the contempt, using the municipality’s video surveillance images.

In addition to policing in the Zambujal neighborhood, the PSP reinforced its resources in several locations, specifically in the so-called Sensitive Urban Zones.
