The number of people in poverty in Portugal continues to increase

The number of people in poverty in Portugal continues to increase. At the moment, There are already more than 2 million Portuguese people in this situation.

The warning is from European Anti-Poverty Network (EAPN).

In an interview with SIC Notícias, Maria José Vicente, coordinator of EAPN, said that the number of people with income below 591 euros is “alarming” and ensured that only in the last year “more 85 thousand people” began to live in a situation of poverty.

“EAPN Portugal considers that we have to be attentive (…) Poverty is not just a question of income, poverty concerns several dimensions of people’s lives”, he said.

According to Maria José Vicente, “in relation to the situation of monetary poverty, women belong to the most affected group (…) then the elderly (…) and then children”.

This Thursday, October 17th, is World Poverty Eradication Day and so throughout this week there will be several initiatives to raise awareness once again about this problem.
