Farmers in the North affected by the fires begin to receive support from the Government

In the North region, farmers who were victims ofSeptember firesThis Monday, they began to receive support from the State. The Minister of Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, reveals that even those who do not have documentation proving the losses can receive up to 6 thousand euros.

The minister informs that the Regional Coordination and Development Commission goes to the location to confirm the losses presented by the farmers and, if confirmed, guarantees that the guardianship pays amounts of up to 6,000 euros.

“If they have supporting documents, we can pay more than that”, he explains.

He also notes that “there is a culture installed in public services that relies heavily on papers and trusts that papers always reflect reality”, something that, he adds, “is often not the case.”

For this reason, he understands that this is “a culture that needs to change” and stresses:

“We only ask for the essential papers.”

Nine people died and 175 were injured due to the fires that hit the third week of September, mainly in the North and Center regions of the country. The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority excludes from this count the two civilians who died of sudden illness.

These fires caused 135,000 hectares of burned area, according to the European Copernicus system, and destroyed dozens of homes.
