Robert Smith explains why he turned down Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing: “It’s just greed. The Cure don’t need that much money.”

Robert Smith gave an interview to the “Sunday Times”, where he explained why the Cure did not adopt Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing” system on their new tour.

For the musician, this system is nothing more than a “scam”. “I was shocked by the profits that ticketing companies make. I thought: we don’t need all the money since,” he began explaining. “My personal struggles with the label have revolved around how we can make things cheaper. The only reason I would charge more for a show is if it was the last chance to sell a t-shirt.”

“However, if you believed you would still be here a year from now, you would want the show to be so good that people would want to see you again. You therefore don’t want to charge as much as the market will let you. If people save money on tickets, they will buy beer or merchandising”, he justified.

“We don’t let them impose a ‘dynamic pricing’ system because it’s a scam that would disappear if all artists said they didn’t want it. But most artists hide behind their agents. They say they didn’t know. Of course they know”, he said. “If they say they didn’t know, they are either stupid or lying. It has everything to do with greed.”

It’s worth remembering that the Cure’s new album, “Songs of a Lost World”, will be released on November 1st.
