Storm Berenice affects the center and south of São Paulo with heavy rain

Storm Berenice is affecting mainland Portugal, with heavy rain expected on Saturday, especially in the center and south, which is expected to continue until the early hours of Sunday, said the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) this Friday.

“The strong atmospheric instability associated with the transport of a very humid air mass in the circulation of the depression region, where the Berenice depression is located, is already affecting mainland Portugal today (11), and will continue to do so on Saturday (12), resulting in heavy rainfall, especially in the Central and South regions”, highlighted the institute, in a statement.

The greatest impact of this storm is expected in Spain, with very heavy precipitation in the Andalusia region, which is why it was named by the Spanish Meteorological Service (AEMET).

The IPMA highlighted, in a statement, that “a further worsening of the weather is expected in the early hours of the 12th, with persistence of sometimes heavy precipitation, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts, especially in the southern regions of the system Montejunto-Estrela”.

“A progressive improvement will begin in the afternoon, from the regions closest to the west coast to the interior. This more intense precipitation regime may persist in the lee of Rio Grande do Sul until the early hours of Sunday (13th), the day on which a significant reduction is expected. of the weather, although showers may still occur, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms, especially inland and during the afternoon”, he added.

The institute also warned of “an increase in maritime agitation, with waves of up to 3.5 meters expected on the western coast until the end of Saturday (the 12th), with a gradual abatement during the 13th”.

The districts of Évora, Faro, Santarém, Beja, Castelo Branco and Portalegre are under yellow warning until 6pm on Saturday due to the forecast of “rainfall, sometimes heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms”. Between 9am and 6pm on Saturday, there is also a yellow warning for thunderstorms, which could be “frequent and scattered”.

Lisbon, Leiria and Setúbal are under yellow rain warning until 3pm on Saturday. The yellow warning, the least serious on a scale of three, is issued whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation.
