October 5: Marcelo praised democracy, the Republic and pluralism. Moedas attacked political and party “inertias and vanities”

It was a speech like on other occasions Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has preferred to give on the 5th of October: more history and less about current political affairs, but always with a reading bridge to the moment the country is going through. With negotiations for the 2025 State Budget still ongoing, the President of the Republic chose to give a speech with a history of the crises that the Republic and democracy managed to overcome. And leave the defense of both as the best systems for overcoming crises.

“The most imperfect democracy is much better than the most tempting dictatorship”, said the President, expressing, however, what still needs to be improved so that “our republic is freer, more just, more supportive”. And he highlighted the paths for improvement that need to be followed. The Republic and democracy “know that they have to change, and a lot for the two million poor people who continue to exist, for the inequality between people and territories”, they have to change in the fight against corruption, in promoting economic growth and innovation.
