Marcelo praises Gouveia e Melo, but refuses to say whether he has what it takes to be the next President
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praises Admiral Gouveia e Melo, but does not dare to say whether he will have the necessary characteristics to be the next President of the Republic.
Speaking to journalists, this Wednesday, during a visit to Troia, there was a Navy drone exercise – the “Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping Augmented by Maritime Unnmanned Systems (REPMUS)” -, o Head of State made a point of paying “a compliment” to Henrique Gouveia e Melo, with him at his side.
However, when asked whether the current Chief of Staff of the Navy will have good characteristics to be the next Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces – i.e, the next President of the Republic -, there Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa no longer dared to give any more compliments.
“This is already beyond my capacity, within the framework of the REPMUS exercise”, he replied.
Admiral Gouveia e Melo, who became a well-known figure to the public when he led the vaccination against Covid-19 in Portugal, has come to be identified as a potential candidate for Belémin the next presidential elections. One idea that Gouveia e Melo himself did not reject – expressly refusing to “say no” to that possibility.
