Left sees “sign of hope” in French union, Chega laments “tragedy” for Europe

PS, BE, PAN and Livre highlighted this Sunday that the extreme right was defeated in the French legislative elections, while Chega considered that the result constitutes a “defeat for Europe”.

In a publication on the social network X (formerly Twitter), the general secretary of the PS congratulated “the French left and its unity for this extraordinary result”.

“The New Popular Front won the elections in France. The extreme right was clearly defeated. ‘France deserves better than an alternative between neoliberalism and fascism’, as Olivier Faure, secretary general, said from @partisocialiste”, wrote Pedro Nuno Santos.

The PS general secretary argued that “united, the left defeated the extreme right at the polls, now it will have to defeat it in governance and public policies” and considered that “the best barrier against extreme right is in the defense and deepening of the Social State”.

BE coordinator, Mariana Mortágua, wrote on the same social network that “the left defeated the extreme right”.

“The French people have shown that the choice is not between the neoliberal center and the extreme right. The victory of the left, led by @FranceInsoumise, paves the way for a radically social and ecological project. Hope gains strength in Europe”, highlighted the blocker.

For his part, the leader of Chega considered that the result of the French elections constitutes “a real collapse for Europe”.

“Disaster for the economy, tragedy in immigration and bad in the fight against corruption”, he added, also in a publication on the social network X.

On the same social network, the PAN spokesperson considered that “the French people defeated the extreme right”, arguing that “it was a good day for democracy, which shows that early winners and the victory of social progress should never be declared and environmental”.

In a statement, Livre noted that “French voters mobilized and flocked to the polls en masse to avoid the first far-right government since the Second World War”, but said that this is, “by far, the best usual result of the extreme right in legislative elections in France”.

Livre highlighted that this is “the time to act and put into practice social, environmental and progressive measures that respond to the desires of everyone who lives in France”, considering it necessary “create a social and ecological Republic that is clearly and undoubtedly feminist, anti-racist, ecological and progressive”.

The party also highlighted that “this result shows that the convergence of progressive, environmental and left-wing forces is the best way to, in parallel, combat the extreme right and create an alternative governance”.

According to the first projections released after the polls closed, the left-wing alliance won the second round of the French legislative elections, ahead of the coalition of President Emmanuel Macron and the extreme right, which appeared as a favorite in the polls.

According to the first estimates released, in the second round of elections none of the three blocs will obtain a majority.

In the first round, on June 30, the National Union (RN, French acronym), Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, managed to win legislative elections for the first time, obtaining 33.1% of the votes and almost double its support since France last elected its National Assembly in 2022.

It was followed by the left-wing alliance Nova Frente Popular (which brings together socialists, ecologists and communists and is led by the France Insubmissa (LFI, radical left party of Jean-Luc Mélenchon), with 28%.

The Ensemble (Together), a centrist and liberal grouping led by Renaissance, President Emmanuel Macron’s party, obtained 20%.
