“À gauche or au center?” The left won, Macron resisted, but ungovernability hangs over French politics
An unsubmissive France exultant, but with blocking forces to reach Matignon. A defeated extreme right, but betting on a “final victory†that it continues to schedule for the Élysée in 2027. And a President surviving, but with a Prime Minister who is resigning and making it clear that he would not have dissolved the National Assembly. The French gathered for a late ‘apéro’ did not expect the menu for this Sunday’s election night to deviate so much from the ‘à la carte’ proposals. But Having removed, at least for now, the specter of the extreme right at the head of the government, the specter of ungovernability remains.
