“What the people decide is well decided”: Marcelo calls for respect for the will of the French

The President of the Republic asks that we wait for the final results in France and highlights the importance of these elections for Europe. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa calls for respect for the will of the French people.

“I have a lot of difficulty commenting. If the French President doesn’t know what to say, imagine the Portuguese President about what is happening in a friendly country. I carefully observe what is happening, which is very important for Europe.â€

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa promises more comments for Monday, but adds: “What the people decide is well decided†.

The left-wing coalition Nova Frente Popular won the second round of the French elections this evening, with the presidential coalition Ensemble taking second place and, the big surprise of the night, the defeated far-right . União Nacional is expected to come in third place, after winning the first round last week.

Without reaching the mark of 289 deputies, synonymous with an absolute majority, or even without approaching it, none of the party blocs is in a position to form a government alone.

Next week will be marked by a series of negotiations for the main positions in the French National Assembly, before the opening of the new legislature on July 18th.
