Jon Landau, producer of Titanic and Avatar, has died

The Oscar-winning film producer for the film ‘Titanic’, Jon Landau, died this Saturday, aged 63, Disney Entertainment announced, without giving the cause of death.

Landau worked closely with director James Cameron, not only on “Titanic†but also on “Avatar†.

“Jon was a visionary whose extraordinary talent and passion brought some of the most extraordinary stories to life on the big screen. His remarkable contribution to the film industry leaves an indelible mark and He will be deeply missed. He was an iconic and successful producer and even better person, a true force of nature who inspired everyone around him,” said Alan Bergman, co-president of Disney Entertainment.

Landau’s partnership with Cameron led him to three Oscar nominations, the North American film academy awards, considered the most important in the industry. He won one, in 1997, with the worldwide box office hit “Titanicâ€.

The duo signed some of the biggest blockbusters in cinema history, including “Avatar†and its sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water†.

Landau’s career began in the 80s of the last century, as a production manager, gradually rising up the career ladder until he became producer on “Titanic†, the expensive epic by James Cameron about the historic sinking of the largest passenger ship at the time of the disaster, in 1912. The bet paid off, with the film becoming the first to surpass the billion-dollar barrier in box office revenue, winning 11 Oscars, including best film.

“I don’t know how to act, I don’t know how to compose, I don’t know how to do visual effects. That’s probably why I’m a producer,” said Landau, at the moment he accepted the Oscar with James Cameron.
