Bloc submitted a request to urgently hear Lucília Gago in Parliament

BE submitted this Tuesday a request to urgently hear the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) in Parliament regarding the annual activity report and to provide “any clarifications that prove necessary”.

In the initiative, signed by the party’s parliamentary leader, Fabian Figueiredo, and addressed to the president of the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees, the blockers recall that the Attorney General of the Republic “ends her term in October this year , having already expressed his unavailability to continue in the position”.

“The Left Bloc Parliamentary Group understands that It is timely and pertinent that the Attorney General of the Republic is called to this Parliamentary Committee, in order to present the annual activity report and provide any clarifications that prove necessary”, the text reads.

The blockers point out that “the work carried out by the Public Ministry is reflected in an activity report relating to the previous judicial year and presented by May 31st of each year”.

“Although the law provides that, in addition to being publicly disclosed, this report is presented institutionally, the truth is that the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic limited itself, in the past, to publishing this report on its website gina on the internet and that, since 2019, not even this partial compliance with the Statute of the Public Ministry has taken place. Never, to date, have any of these reports been presented to the Assembly of the Republic“, is warned in the text.

From the blocists’ point of view, “these reports are a tool that contributes to greater transparency and publicity of the Public Ministry’s activity, which becomes all the more pertinent the greater the media coverage of the Justice, particularly the so-called megaprocesses”.

The BE parliamentary group argues that “valuing the importance of this report and promoting its debate contributes to strengthening the trust of Portuguese citizens in Justice”.

BE asked for this request to be debated on Wednesday in the Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees committee.

The PAN has also requested a hearing from the Attorney General of the Republic in Parliament to “report” on the application of the Criminal Investigation Organization Law and compliance with constitutional and legal guarantees for the protection of judicial secrecy.

On Monday, the coordinator of BE, Mariana Mortágua, defended the hearing of the Attorney General of the Republic in parliament to present the activity report of the Public Ministry, highlighting that this body “is not is not above democratic scrutiny.”

The Public Ministry opened an investigation into information leaks in the Influencer process, after the transcript of wiretaps of telephone conversations between the former prime minister, António Costa, was released. and the then Minister of Infrastructure, João Galamba.

According to information released by several news organizations, the MP’s investigation targets the wiretaps released on Tuesday by CNN Portugal, including one that captures António Costa calling João Galamba to order the dismissal of TAP’s executive president, for political reasons, after the controversial compensation of 500 thousand euros to former administrator Alexandra Reis.
