Suspects of attempted murder of former judge Sergio Moro killed in Brazilian prison

Two suspects of planning attacks against senator and former judge Sergio Moro and other Brazilian authorities were stabbed to death on Monday inside a prison in the state of São Paulo, authorities said.

Three inmates, allegedly linked to the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), the largest criminal faction in Brazil, confessed to their involvement in the double murder and have already been isolated, according to the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat of São Paulo.

Authorities are investigating a fourth inmate allegedly involved in the crime, which occurred in one of the wings of a prison in Presidente Venceslau, in the interior of São Paulo, the state where the PCC was born and the epicenter of its criminal activities.

The police opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the two deaths.

According to the local press, the two dead are Janeferson Aparecido, known as Nefo, and Reginaldo Oliveira, known as Rê.

Both were accused of being members of a PCC cell responsible for planning attacks against Brazilian authorities.

In March 2023, a Federal Police operation resulted in the arrest of several members of the group, which had been planning the simultaneous murder of several members of the authorities for a year.

Sergio Moro, world famous for condemning the current Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and who later became Minister of Justice in the Government of Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022), was a priority target.

The PCC closely monitored Moro and his family’s routine.

According to the investigation, the PCC planned to kidnap Moro on October 30, 2022, the day of the second round of the presidential elections in which leader Lula da Silva emerged victorious in the elections against Bolsonaro.

Moro developed his career as a magistrate in the city of Curitiba and led the Lava Jato anti-corruption operation.

The PCC was born in the 1990s in the prisons of São Paulo and today it is the most powerful criminal gang dedicated to drug trafficking in South America, with tentacles in several countries in the region. £o.
