Taking into account their concise and enigmatic nature, what they say is as significant as what they mean. “The Hunger Artist†presents us with the suffocating case of a man who displays his prolonged fasting as a spectacle, because he doesn’t know how to do anything else, and who even so has to make an effort to make the public do not prefer any other entertainment. In “Jackals and Arabs†, the testimonies of domineering Arabs and the jackals they dominated come together, the mutinous subjection of the latter and the pleasure of the former with the cruelty and hatred of others.
